MENTAL TOUGHNESS

MENTAL TOUGHNESS

The journey to reach the pinnacle requires us to take on tough challenges, face ourselves, engages serious searching, ask tough questions and find answers. Mental toughness, mental strength, resilience and tenacity are terms regularly used in the world. Mentally tough sportsmen know how to win; they have the courage to stand tall in the face of adversity and refuse to be intimidated.

Mental toughness is the stuff of champions. Mental toughness incorporate traits like Winning mentality, work ethic, self-confidence, motivation, attitude control and positive energy. Another important trait of mental toughness is the ability to take a leap of faith and believe in yourself. It is the ability not to give up! Mentally tough people are relentless, they won’t give you anything. They have that inner will and desire to never give in.

WHAT IS MENTAL TOUGHNESS?

It is the ability to keep going through adversity and the ability to bounce back, that is resilience.  All people experience tough situations or times. But in those situations, they are able to separate their thoughts and emotions from the environment in which they operate. You have to be tough to be successful in many walks of life.

Tough people are willing to make the sacrifice that others don’t seem to make. Mental toughness is the ability to take a leap of faith and believe in yourself. An extreme challenge needs extreme toughness. So you have to endure incredible discomfort that seems to be par for the course when you are striving to become the best.

World-class people have mental toughness which is expressed in different forms. Mental toughness is often necessary when you’re attempting a challenge that requires extreme physical exertion. The ability to keep going through physical discomfort and pain is an example of toughness.

“There have been many times when it seems hopeless, when the odds were stacked against me. I have been broke. I have been at points where every avenue seemed to have petered out. Invariably, that’s when things seem to happen” Polar Explorer Ben Saunders

“The greatest challenges are not necessarily physical challenges …the greatest challenges are mental”. Chris Cook, Double Olympian and Commonwealth Champion
